President’s Update 12-17-09

Good afternoon!

This has been an extraordinary year at Everett Community College.  Positioning the College to help our students and communities bounce back from the many challenges they have faced this year underscores the role of EvCC in our economy. We have been reasonably successful with our efforts despite more than $3 million in reductions from our state allocation.

An exceptional group of faculty and staff all worked hard to serve more than 10,000 students each term.  While walking the campus and meeting with students, I’ve heard stories about being displaced from their jobs, and living a tenuous lifestyle while waiting for unemployment insurance or financial aid. Many have not been in school for 25 or 30 years. I admire their commitment.

On the other hand, student life on campus has flourished. There are more students involved with student government, student activities, and there are more student clubs. Student leaders have engaged themselves in many college committees and statewide student issues. Their input has been invigorating and exceptional. We all appreciate their willingness to participate despite full class schedules.

The College continues in a positive direction with our self-study efforts and we’ll soon see a draft report. The efforts with International Education and Corporate Training have been exemplary and productive. We are moving forward with the expansion of our efforts in Monroe, increasing our coordination with local school districts, continuing with the development of a major capital campaign strategy, and pursuing new ways to increase our share of available grant funds. And, most importantly, continue with enrolling students in our courses and working with them to successfully complete their desired goals at EvCC.

Without a caring college community, none of this would be possible. Thanks to all of you for supporting one another, students and our partners. We look forward to 2010 and our continued important work. Have a happy, safe and enjoyable new year.
